Morning: Understanding and Assessment
The first half of the day focuses on core knowledge, reducing stigma, and evaluating safety.
- Debunking Myths: Understand why people self-harm and separate facts from common fears.
- Spotting Signs: Recognise the emotional and physical indicators of distress.
- Asking Directly: Learn how to use clear, calm, and non-judgemental language to ask about self-harm.
- Risk Assessment: Practice structured methods to gauge the severity and urgency of the risk.
Afternoon: Response and Action
The second half centers on practical communication, safety planning, and support strategies.
- Compassionate Response: Master active listening and learn how to respond without panicking or lecturing.
- Crisis Management: Handle immediate safety concerns and provide basic physical first aid if needed.
- Safety Plans: Work together with the individual to build realistic coping strategies and next steps.
- Boundaries and Care: Identify proper referral pathways, professional boundaries, and self-care tips for the helper.
