Between 2020 and 2022, we spent time interviewing former staff and volunteers for ‘Women Listening to Women: an oral history of Bristol Crisis Service for Women’. Using excerpts from these interviews we created two portable exhibitions which toured in 2022, and a 24pp booklet about the history and impact of Self Injury Support (our previous organisation name before we became SIFT in 2026, also formerly known as Bristol Crisis Service for Women) and the experience of volunteering on its support services.
Freelance podcast producer Marnie Woodmeade used the interviews in a series of three, half-hour podcasts about Bristol Crisis Service for Women and the history of self-harm.
The ‘Gentle Activism’ podcast can be found on the project website www.womenlisteningtowomen.org.uk or on Spotify.
The Women Listening to Women website contains the full recordings and transcripts of the oral history interviews, all of Self Injury Support’s previous publications, a downloadable PDF of the booklet and a timeline of information about our organisation.
The exhibition of this oral history project was on display at the Glenside Hospital Museum in Stapleton between February and April 2022. The booklets were distributed across community and health centres, libraries, museums and other charities in Bristol.
The project was made possible by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
