Take Space – Self-Harm Support Group

Online and In-Person Self-Harm Group Support Programme 2024-2025

Take Space, an online and in-person group support programme, was created to provide safe, non-judgemental peer support for individuals affected by self-harm.

Our activities were funded by the People’s Postcode Lottery and allowed us to develop a framework for providing compassionate, trauma-informed group support that was easily accessible.

“I no longer feel isolated and alone.”

In-person groups were held locally by our team in Bristol, and online sessions were attended by people from across the UK, including Huddersfield, Rhondda, Hemel Hempstead, Bath, Sheringham, Grantham, Manchester, and more.

Self-harm affects people from a wide range of ages and backgrounds – the majority of attendees for our in-person groups was 18-34, whilst attendance of our online groups showed that over 75% of attendees were aged 35-54.

“The calm, safe, non-judgemental environment was invaluable.”

Our Take Space groups are taking a break whilst we continue to work on future funding. The past year saw several key achievements, including:

  • Evidence of the need for self-harm peer support groups
  • Improved holistic wellbeing by fostering a crossover between group support and other services
  • Greater national awareness of peer support services

“Like a lot of people I feel really cautious to talk about my self-harm but the group has been so positive and supportive. It’s normalised talking about it – in a safe space at least.”

“I felt so comfortable; the space was very accommodating.”

Subject to future funding we hope to be able to offer a range of activities that provide opportunities for creative expression, physical activity and connecting with nature. We are also exploring relationships with libraries and community centres to help facilitate participation for those without access to technology.

These plans align with our long-term goal of providing sustainable, inclusive support for all individuals affected by self-harm.

If you’d like to register interest in our groups, or you are a professional who would like to discuss facilitating a future group, we’d love to hear from you – send us an email: [email protected].
